The vehicle/equipment mechanic repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment in and around the shipyard facility.

Essential Job Functions

The vehicle/equipment mechanic:

  1. Examines vehicle or equipment and determines the nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
  2. Plans work procedure using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
  3. Determines what parts are necessary for repair and requisitions parts accordingly.
  4. Has knowledge of electrical, fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, brake, and other automotive systems necessary.
  5. Lubricates moving parts and drives or tests vehicle to verify conformance to specifications.
  6. Performs maintenance on all vehicles and motorized equipment in and around shipyard.
  7. Changes oil, checks batteries, repairs tires and tubes, and lubricates equipment and machinery.
  8. Performs other duties, including fabrication or repair of metal components such as exhaust systems, chassis repair, and structural repair.
  9. May fabricate lifting or towing, attachments hydraulic systems, shields, or other such devices.
  10. Examines protective guards, nuts, and bolts and specified safety devices, making adjustments as required.
  11. May remove, dismantle, and rebuild engine, transmission, clutch, rear end, and other components of drive trains.
  12. Will be required to wear all of the necessary personal protective equipment such as hard hats, eye and hearing protection, gloves, and dust and respiratory protection.

Working Conditions

Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays as required. Works in all kinds of weather and at different locations throughout the shipyard. May be called on to perform work at an alternate location away from facility. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working at heights greater than six feet, over water, and in confined spaces. May be called on to work alone. Subject to dramatic temperature changes. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.

Essential Job Requirements

The vehicle/equipment mechanic must:

  • Be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.
  • Have attended vocational school, technical school, or high school or have completed commercial, shop, technical, or on-the-job training. (In-house training must have been organized study provided by an employer. On-the-job training is serving as a learner or trainee on the job under the instruction of a qualified worker.)
  • Be able to provide verifiable references of past work experience.

Physical Requirements

The vehicle/equipment mechanic position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.

The U. S. Dept. of Labor classifies this job as heavy work, exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
