Responsibilities
The diesel mechanic repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment in and around the shipyard facility.
Essential Job Functions
The diesel mechanic
- Examines vehicle or equipment and determines nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
- Plans work procedure using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
- Determines what parts are necessary for repair and requisitions parts accordingly.
- Has knowledge of electrical, fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, brake, and other automotive systems necessary.
- Lubricates moving parts and drives or tests vehicle to verify conformance to specifications.
- Performs maintenance on all vehicles and motorized equipment in and around shipyard.
- Changes oil, checks batteries, repairs tires and tubes, and lubricates equipment and machinery.
- May perform other duties, including the fabrication or repair of metal components such as exhaust systems, chassis repair, and structural repair.
- May fabricate lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other such devices.
- Examines protective guards, nuts and bolts, and specified safety devices and makes adjustments as required.
- May remove, dismantle, and rebuild engine, transmission, clutch, rear end, and other components of drive trains.
- Will be required to wear all of the necessary personal protective equipment, such as, hard hats, eye and hearing protection, gloves, and dust and respiratory protection.
Working Conditions
Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. The diesel mechanic works in all kinds of weather and at different locations throughout the yard. The diesel mechanic may be required to perform work at a remote location other than at shipyard facility. The diesel mechanic may be subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as the proximity to moving mechanical parts, working at heights greater than six feet, working over water, and working in confined spaces. The diesel mechanic may be required to work alone and may be subject to dramatic temperature changes. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are all to be worn accordingly.
Essential Job Requirements
The diesel mechanic must
- Be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.
- Have attended vocational school, technical school, or high school or have completed commercial, shop, technical, or on-the-job training.
- Be able to provide verifiable references of past work history.
Physical Requirements
The diesel mechanic position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking and an acute sense of smell.
This job is classified as heavy work, exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
