The sandblaster/painter uses an abrasive to blast the surface of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt to achieve a specified finish. The sandblaster/painter applies paint or similar-type coatings either by spraying, brushing, or rolling onto surfaces.
Responsibilities
The sandblaster/painter
- Masks specified areas of objects to protect from blasting, if necessary.
- Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or steel shot of specified grade into machine hopper.
- Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive material flowing through nozzle.
- Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasives over surface of parts and manually directs nozzle over area to be blasted.
- Blasts in enclosed and open areas using proper protective clothing and equipment.
- Examines finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications.
- Cleans sand and debris from work area.
- Masks specified areas of objects not to be painted to protect from unwanted overspray.
- Washes surfaces to remove grease, rust, scale, and dirt, using soap and water or other solvents.
- Fills cracks and holes with patching materials, if necessary, smoothing surfaces using sand paper, sanding machines, or hand scraper.
- Mixes components of paint and thins to obtain proper consistency and color according to specification.
- Sprays, rolls, or brushes specified amount or thickness of primer, intermediate, and topcoat, which can be paint, varnish, stain, sealer, or other industrial-type coating.
- May layout and paint insignias, symbols, designs, or other markings according to specifications.
- Paints in enclosed and open areas using proper protective clothing and equipment.
- May set up ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, and scaffolding prior to painting.
- Examines finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications.
- Cleans, maintains, and repairs all blasting and painting equipment.
- Performs any combination of incidental tasks, such as transporting tools, materials, or supplies; loading materials or work pieces onto racks; operating overhead cranes and company vehicles; and returning any excess supplies for proper storage or disposal.
Working Conditions
Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday, including weekends and holidays as required. May be required to perform work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. May be required to work alone and in confined spaces. Works in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to mechanical and electrical hazards, ultraviolet light, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working on scaffolding and ladders at height greater than six feet, working over water, working in confined spaces, dramatic temperature changes, fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.
Physical Requirements
Repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.
The U.S. Department of Labor classifies this job as heavy work — exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
