Responsibilities
The guard/security officer performs security and watchman duties by patrolling, observing, and maintaining watch over assigned facilities, equipment, materials, and supplies; inspects, examines, and checks locks on doors, windows, enclosures, fences, and gates to ensure that they are secure; guards against theft, vandalism, fire, and illegal entry or use of equipment and facilities; detects and responds to illegal and questionable activities; and detects and reports deficiencies.
The guard/security officer operates communication equipment to report emergencies, vandalism, irregular or unauthorized activities, and serious violations and threats to the security of assigned area; admits authorized workers into building/facilities after working hours; maintains keys, equipment, facilities, materials, and supplies; may be required to prepare and submit reports; and observes safety regulations.
The guard/security officer answers telephone calls; and greets and guides visitors, answering questions and providing information pertaining to assigned facilities.
Essential Job Functions
The guard/security officer
- Patrols offices, buildings, and grounds to prevent theft or damage to property, equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Patrols a prescribed area on an installation to check the status of locks, alarms, fences, gates, or other barriers.
- Patrols installation perimeters to detect faulty fences and/or detection equipment, trespassing violations, and attempted thefts.
- Controls personnel access by monitoring the identification of individuals entering controlled areas.
- Refers persons who lack proper credentials to a control point to arrange access.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Prepares a report of daily activities.
- Calls appropriate person in accordance with established procedure for work that requires prompt attention.
- Investigates vandalism and may detain suspects until police respond.
- Controls vehicles traffic on site.
Working Conditions
Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. Works in all kinds of weather. May be required to perform work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons.
Essential Job Requirements
The guard/security officer must
- Be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.
- Possess a valid state-issued operator's license.
Physical Requirements
The guard/security officer position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking and an acute sense of smell. The ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time is essential to the position.
This position is classified as medium work – exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
