The pipefitter lays out, fabricates, installs, maintains, and repairs piping systems on ships and vessels or other work that is to be done in shipyard facility or that is related to shipyard operations.

Responsibilities

The pipefitter

  • Plans layout of piping for fuel delivery, hydraulic, pneumatic, cooling, heating, water, fire systems, and oil lines, following blueprints, templates, or oral instructions from supervisor.
  • Measures and cuts pipe to specified length and cuts access holes in bulkheads, walls, shell plate, structural members, and decks for installation.
  • Primarily makes cuts with hand torch, but may also use shop machines to cut and thread pipe and fittings.
  • Bends pipe or tubing to achieve specified shape for conformity to piping plan using pipe bender or will place in a jig and heat to obtain proper dimensions.
  • Bolts or tack welds hanger brackets to support system.
  • Connects pipe to fixtures by using screw type fittings, soldering, tack welding, or by bolting flanges using hand wrenches or power tools.
  • Aligns parts such as flanges, valves, and piping in relation to each other using jacks, come-a-longs, clamps, clips, wedges, and mauls.
  • Marks and drills locations for holes.
  • May be assisted by tacker to tack weld clips, hangers, brackets, or pipe into place prior to final welding.
  • May use portable power tools such as grinders, chippers, drills, sanders, etc.
  • Will bevel pipe using hand torch or pipe beveling machine.
  • May test installed systems to ensure that systems meet specifications using hydrostatic or air-supplied testing techniques.
  • Must be able to perform basic shipfitting duties if needed.
  • May repair, pack, or adjust valves.
  • Perform other tasks, including transporting tools, materials, supplies, and parts. The pipefitter may use overhead cranes and operate company vehicles.

Working Conditions

Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday, including weekends and holidays as required. May be required to perform work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. May be required to work alone and in confined spaces. Works in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to mechanical and electrical hazards, ultraviolet light, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working on scaffolding and ladders at height greater than six feet, working over water, working in confined spaces, dramatic temperature changes, fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.

Physical Requirements

Repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.

The U.S. Department of Labor classifies this job as medium work — exerting 25 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.

Qualifications

The pipefitter must be able to

  • Read alphabetically and numerically.
  • Pass a company-specified performance or standards test.
  • Have vocational education, commercial or on-the-job technical training and/or technical schooling.
  • Provide verifiable references of past work history.
