The marine diesel service technician is a land-based position that will be responsible for the service and repair of marine propulsion and generator engines.

Responsibilities

The marine diesel service technician will

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel engines and the equipment they drive.
  • Use hand tools and power tools for the troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of diesel engines.
  • Use diagnostic tools, such as pressure gauges, electrical multimeters and process meters, electronic test tools, digital and manual measuring tools, and computerized diagnostic tools to complete accurate assessments of diesel engines and equipment.
  • Specialize in the repair and maintenance of marine diesel engines, but also be available to assist in and learn about other marine equipment, such as compressors, marine reduction gears, thrusters, and propulsion units.
  • Recondition engine components, such as water pumps, oil pumps, fuel systems, etc., and be able to install and test them on live equipment.
  • Communicate and report daily activities to supervisors and management through the use of verbal, written, and electronic reporting tools.

Travel

The marine diesel service technician can expect frequent travel to vessels, both inshore and offshore, with the possibility of overnight stays and international travel.

Minimum Requirements

  • High-school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid U.S. driver's license with clean motor-vehicle record
  • Valid TWIC Card
  • Valid US work authorization

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical training on marine diesel engines
  • Knowledge of and experience with Caterpillar marine diesel engines (Knowledge and experience with Cummins, Detroit, MAK, Bergen, John Deere, and other major brands would be accepted as well.)
  • Basic computer skills for the use of computerized engine troubleshooting and monitoring tools, such as CAT ET, and electronic reporting tools, such as electronic service reports and email
