The marine propulsion technician will be responsible for the service and repairs of marine propulsion equipment, thrusters and reduction gears.

Essential Functions

The propulsion technician will

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to offshore vessel propulsion equipment, thrusters and reduction gears in the field and workshop.
  • Use hand tools and power tools for troubleshooting, maintenance, repair and overhaul of marine propulsion equipment.
  • Use diagnostic tools, such as pressure gauges, electrical multimeters and process meters, electronic test tools, and digital and manual measuring tools, to complete accurate assessments of marine propulsion equipment.
  • Specialize in the repair and maintenance of marine propulsion equipment but also be available to assist in and learn about other marine equipment, such as compressors, shaft lines, couplings, pumps, diesel engines and generators.
  • Recondition propulsion-equipment components, such as water pumps, oil pumps, clutch packs, etc., and be able to install and test them on live equipment.
  • Communicate and report daily activities to supervisors and management through the use of verbal, written and electronic reporting tools.


The propulsion technician will frequently travel to local and international vessels inshore and offshore with the possibility of overnight stays.

Minimum Qualifications

The propulsion technician must have a

  • High-school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license with clean motor-vehicle record.
  • Valid TWIC Card.

Preferred Qualifications

It is preferred that the propulsion technician have

  • Technical training on marine propulsion equipment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Rolls-Royce, Schottel, and Brunvol. (Knowledge and experience with ZF, Jason, Siemens, Twin Disc, Reintjes, and other major brands would be accepted as well.)
  • Basic computer skills for the use of computerized monitoring tools and electronic reporting tools, such as electronic service reports and email.
