The RMC technician will monitor, maintain, analyze and advise on performance data for vessels' satellite (VSAT) communications; manage and report on satellite network bandwidth availability and usage; and remotely troubleshoot and restore satellite network communications to vessels.

Responsibility and Essential Functions

The RMC technician

  • Is responsible for over 150 (as of 2017) individual, globally located networks.
  • Will use Marine Stabilized Antennas (ms VSAT), which are different than normal antennas due to the use of specialized software and hardware to maintain a steady signal while vessel is in constant motion. There are several proprietary software and hardware systems that must be individually configured to produce accurate satellite tracking for vessels.
  • Will work as part of a small team that is responsible for troubleshooting, repair, customer service, bandwidth allocation, TCP/UDP tracking, transmit power settings, latency, diagnostics and satellite network errors and remote repairs.
  • Aside from VSAT issues, responsible for diagnostics and configuration of Asterisk, Linux remote systems. Windows remote systems, switches, routers and other systems on each individual network.

Cyber Security Functions

The RMC technician

  • Is responsible for creation, review and updating current security policies, processes and procedures for fleet operations.
  • Remotely manages, maintains and configures software with different OS such as Linux (to include Custom OS, Windows and iOS).
  • Performs other tasks, including penetration testing, on a simulated network.
  • Performs crew training and coordination with corporate cyber-security manager, using CL1 to configure routers, switches, antenna-control units, and modems.
  • Performs bridge-systems monitoring, IBS and DP trend creation, troubleshooting network components on various oil-field support vessels in different regions of the world.
  • Works closely with different partner companies to troubleshoot a wide variety of hardware and software issues.
  • Maintains and balances network load across several satellite networks, as well as monitoring and diagnosing network issues.

Position Type

  • This is a full-time position. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but the RMC technician does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

  • DP assurance/RMC director

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This position may occasionally require visits to the plant and exposure to shop elements such as noise, moving parts, dust and fumes.

Travel

  • Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Minimum Qualifications

The RMC technician must have

  • A bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of quality-related experience; associate's degree with four years of quality-related experience; or a minimum of five years of quality-related experience.
  • Training in general safety, electrostatic-discharge awareness, foreign-object-damage awareness, and quality-system awareness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of quality system requirements
  • Knowledge of ISO 9000 (regulatory) requirements with some knowledge of aerospace requirements
