Responsibilities

The laborer/helper performs general labor and work that is related to shipyard operations in ships, boats, dry dock, fab shops, warehouse, stockroom, cafeteria, housing, and remote locations.

Essential Job Functions

The laborer/helper

  • Works with blaster/painters, removing scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt from surfaces in preparation to be painted.
  • Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or steel shot, of specified grade into machine hopper.
  • Masks specified areas of objects to protect from over blast or overspray.
  • Loads parts on rack and removes parts from racks after blasting and painting has been completed.
  • Drags hoses, lines, paint pots, and other equipment into position around work area.
  • May blast or spray paint moderately and may also paint with brushes or rollers.
  • May work in confined areas, such as tanks or containers, performing various tasks, such as cleaning bulkheads, bottoms, walls, tank tops, double bottoms, etc., using hand or pressure-washing equipment. The laborer/helper will pick up miscellaneous trash, pump out excess water, fuel, oil, or chemicals, and may also shovel sand into containers and remove from area.
  • Cleans and smooths surfaces using sandpaper, scraper, sanding machines, and electric and pneumatic grinders or buffers.
  • Mixes components of paint to obtain proper consistency and color according to specifications, usually given by oral instruction from the blaster/painter or supervisor.
  • Sets up ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, stages, and scaffolding, removing them when the job is completed.
  • Performs various other duties, such as the cleaning and maintenance of blasting and painting equipment; mowing grass; performing sanitary cleanup; digging holes and ditches; scraping barnacles; picking up and storing hoses, lines, cable, etc.; and transporting tools, materials, and supplies. The laborer/helper may also pick up trash, empty trash cans, and sweep and return any excess supplies for proper storage or disposal.
  • May perform cleanup work in all areas of the facility.
  • May use overhead cranes and operate company vehicles and equipment.

Working Conditions

Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. Works in all kinds of weather. May be required to perform work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. May be required to perform work alone in confined spaces. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working on scaffolding and ladders at heights greater than six feet, working over water, and subject to very dramatic temperature changes, such as when entering or exiting a tank. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.

Physical Requirements

The laborer/helper position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking and an acute sense of smell.

This position is classified as very heavy work – exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for heavy work.
